Amnesia Haze is a sativa-leaning family that brings together old-school genetics from Thailand, Jamaica, Hawaii, Cambodia, Laos and Afghanistan.

Most versions sit around 70–80% sativa and 20–30% indica. People know them for their bright citrus smell, layered flavours and THC that usually lands between 20 and 22%.

Dutch breeders put the pieces together back in the 1990s, and it didn't take long before Amnesia Haze became a staple in Amsterdam coffee shops and picked up top prizes at the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2004 and 2012.

Where amnesia haze came from

Nobody agrees on every detail, but most stories point back to the Netherlands in the nineties.

One version says an American breeder called David Paul Watson gathered Thai, Jamaican, Hawaiian and Afghani landraces and brought them over to Amsterdam.

A Dutch breeder named Zwiep then crossed those with Neville's Haze, a famous line made by Nevil Schoenmakers, and that's how Amnesia Haze was born. Another story reckons it came from Bubblegum and Super Silver Haze, though fewer people buy that one.

Either way, the backbone is a mix of Southeast Asian, Afghani and Jamaican landraces, tidied up and stabilised by Dutch experts.

Don't muddle it with plain Amnesia, which is a different Californian cross of Bubble Gum and Super Silver Haze.

What it smells and tastes like

There’s a strong smell of lemon and lime straight away, backed up by earthy notes and a whiff of incense, sandalwood and spice.

Some people catch woody, peppery Haze vibes, plus hints of mint, liquorice, pine and cardamom.

The taste follows suit: zesty citrus with sweet earth, spice and a touch of cedar, then a peppery, herbal finish. Some plants lean toward fizzy lemon-sweet flavours with floral and creamy edges, while others bring out marjoram, mandarin and even toffee.

The main terpenes doing the heavy lifting are limonene for that citrus punch, myrcene for a softer herbal layer, and caryophyllene adding a bit of spice underneath.

Amnesia Haze is often called a terpene bomb because the smell is strong, complex and hangs around.

Awards and why it's still a big deal

Amnesia Haze took first place at the High Times Cannabis Cup twice, once in 2004 and again in 2012, which is pretty rare. It also grabbed second in the Highlife Cannabis Cup Bio Haze category and made High Times' list of the twenty-five best cannabis varieties ever.

After it hit the streets in the nineties, it spread like wildfire through Dutch coffee shops and helped shape what a whole generation expected from good sativa.

It's still one of the most wanted strains in Amsterdam and across European cannabis clubs, often selling out fast.

People call it 'ami weed' or 'ammo weed', and it's also one of the top sellers in Canada. Its reputation as the definitive Haze, the real deal, has made it a go-to parent for newer hybrids like Dedoverde Haze and Blue Haze.

Seed options and what the plants look like

Amnesia Haze seeds come in feminised photoperiod and autoflowering versions. The feminised ones are known to take twelve to fourteen weeks outdoors to finish, or about 84 to 91 days indoors.

Autoflowering types can stretch up to 150 centimetres and still pack dense, frosty buds with THC hitting 22%, keeping that classic taste intact.

Because it's mostly sativa, Amnesia Haze grows tall. Plants usually reach around 120 centimetre.

The buds are tight and chunky, bright green with orange streaks, and covered in thick trichomes that give them a glazed, frosty look.

Amnesia Haze Strains Frequently Asked Questions

It's mostly sativa, around 70 to 80%, with 20 to 30% indica. The roots go back to Thai, Cambodian, Laotian, Afghani, Jamaican and Hawaiian landraces, all tidied up in the Netherlands during the nineties.

THC usually sits between 20 and 22%, sometimes nudging 25%. CBD is barely there, usually under 1%, so it's very much a THC-heavy strain.

It won first at the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2004 and 2012, plus second in the Highlife Cannabis Cup Bio Haze category. High Times also put it on their all-time top twenty-five list.

The smell leads with lemon and lime, backed by incense, sandalwood and spice. The taste is citrusy and zesty with sweet earth, cedar and a peppery finish. Some plants throw in cardamom, marjoram, mandarin or toffee notes.

Limonene brings the citrus sparkle, myrcene adds herbal softness, and caryophyllene gives a subtle spice. Caryophyllene has been measured at around 2%, with a touch of pinene too.

Feminised photoperiod seeds and autoflowering versions are both available. Feminised ones take twelve to fourteen weeks outdoors, while autos grow up to 150 centimetres and produce dense, resinous buds.

It was bred in the Netherlands in the nineties. One story says David Paul Watson collected landraces, then Zwiep crossed them with Neville's Haze in Amsterdam. Soma Seeds is also linked to its commercial release.

No. Amnesia is a separate Californian cross of Bubble Gum and Super Silver Haze. The two strains have different backgrounds and different characteristics.

Photoperiod seeds need 84 to 91 days indoors, or twelve to fourteen weeks outdoors. Some modern hybrids finish in nine to ten weeks, quicker than the original twelve-week plants.

It took over Dutch menus in the nineties thanks to its complex smell, strong THC and award wins. It became a symbol of Dutch cannabis culture and still sells out regularly in Amsterdam.
