Where blueberry came from

DJ Short started working on Blueberry back in the late 1970s in Oregon. He was playing around with wild landrace strains, Highland Thai, Purple Thai (sometimes called Oregon Purple Thai), and Afghani indica. 

These old-school genetics gave him the building blocks for what became one of the most famous cannabis strains on the planet.

The three-way cross brought together the earthy strength of Afghani, the bright tropical feel of Thai sativas, and the colourful, resinous traits of Purple Thai. 

DJ Short spent years refining the line, picking out plants that smelled the most like blueberries and showed off those striking blue-purple shades in the buds and leaves.

In the 1990s, DJ Short headed over to Europe and shared his work with Dutch seed banks, especially Sagarmartha and Dutch Passion. 

Dutch Passion launched the original Blueberry in 1998, alongside related strains like Blue Velvet, Blue Moonshine, Flo, and Blue Heaven, they called it the Blue Family.

That European release put Blueberry on the map worldwide and turned it into a flagship strain. Since then, Blueberry genetics have spread across seed banks and breeders everywhere, each developing their own versions and crosses, so there's quite a bit of variation out there.

What Blueberry smells and tastes like

Blueberry strains are famous for their sweet, fruity smell that really does remind you of fresh blueberries.

It's a comforting, almost intoxicating scent, and some batches even have hints of vanilla and caramel alongside the berry. 

That distinctive aroma comes from a mix of terpenes, mainly myrcene, caryophyllene, and pinene.

Myrcene brings earthy and fruity notes (you'll find it in mangoes and hops too), caryophyllene adds a bit of spicy pepper (like black pepper and dark spices), and pinene gives a fresh, herbal pine kick (think pine needles and rosemary). 

Together, they create a complex blend of sweet, fruity, and earthy notes with a soft floral edge, something quite different from your typical cannabis smell.

The flavour matches the aroma: intensely fruity with clear blueberry, berry, and grape notes, plus a pleasant sweet floral background and a touch of pine.

Some versions also have subtle earthy or dank undertones, but the main impression is candy-like sweetness. 

The original DJ Short Blueberry from the late 1990s and early 2000s was especially known for tasting exactly like its name, a real rarity in cannabis, where strains often don't live up to their flavour claims.

A single gram of well-cured Blueberry can fill a room with its pungent berry scent, making it a standout for collectors after something with real character.

Awards and modern crosses

Blueberry's reputation really took off after it won first place at the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2000 for Best Indica and Best Overall Strain.

A Blueberry grown by breeder Noon grabbed both honours that year, and Dutch Passion's Blueberry came third in the Indica Cup in 2001 and 2002.

Those wins cemented Blueberry as a benchmark for quality and flavour, and it's kept a loyal following among collectors ever since.

Beyond its own fame, Blueberry has become the foundation for countless modern crosses.

Notable examples include Blue Dream (Blueberry × Haze), Blue Cheese (Blueberry × Cheese), Blue Kush (Blueberry × OG Kush), Skywalker Haze (Blueberry × Haze), Glueberry OG (Blueberry × OG Kush × Gorilla Glue #4), and Auto Blackberry Kush (Blueberry × hash plant).

Each of these inherits the sweet berry terpene character and colourful looks of the original, while bringing in new traits from their other parent strains.

Autoflowering and CBD-rich versions are also out there, offering faster flowering or milder cannabinoid profiles for collectors interested in different genetic expressions.

Cannabinoid levels and seed options

Blueberry usually has THC levels between 16% and 24%, with some versions going higher, Skywalker Haze, for instance, has been measured at 26% or above.

CBD content is mostly low, around 0.26% to 1%, though dedicated CBD-rich Blueberry crosses (like Blueberry CBD) have been bred to contain up to 30% CBD and less than 0.2% THC. 

These figures vary depending on the version, growing conditions, and the specific seed bank or breeder, so it's worth checking individual product specs for precise ranges.

Feminised seeds ensure reliable female plants, while autoflowering variants (created by crossing Blueberry with ruderalis genetics) offer rapid flowering cycles.
