Citrus

Citrus cannabis strains smell and taste like fresh lemons, oranges, limes, and tangerines, bright, zingy, and clean. That zesty kick comes from terpenes like limonene, the same stuff that makes lemon peel smell so good.

While citrus strains sit inside the fruit family, they're so popular and easy to spot that they've earned their own space.

What makes them smell so citrusy?

Limonene does most of the heavy lifting here. It's the terpene that gives cannabis that lemon, orange, or lime punch, and it's the same compound found in citrus peel. But limonene rarely works alone.

Myrcene adds a touch of sweetness and spice, while pinene brings in a fresh, piney edge that sharpens everything up.

Caryophyllene and humulene can throw in earthy or peppery notes, and valencene, less common but lovely, adds a sweet orange vibe.

Some strains also contain tropicannasulfurs and prenylated cannasulfur compounds, which sound complicated but basically mean louder, funkier citrus with a petrol-like twist.

The exact flavour depends on which supporting terpenes show up and how they all play together.

The range of citrus flavours

Citrus strains are refreshing and clean, a bit like peeling a lemon or walking through an orange grove.

Lemon Tree brings fresh Meyer lemon and a savoury rind smell with a skunky kick, while Lemon Thai goes for sour lemon that gets even stronger when warmed.

Clementine bursts with orange, like standing in a citrus orchard, and Orange Bud smells like sweet orange oil with a hint of skunk.

Tangie is all about tangerine, tangy, orange-forward, with a whisper of tropical fruit. Grapefruit does exactly what the name suggests, with a sweet tropical edge.

Orange Apricot mixes Tangie-style citrus with loud, sweet gas notes and a funky petrol undertone. Sunset Sherbet blends tangy citrus with sour fruit and a subtle herbal touch, and Super Lemon Haze delivers zesty lemon with the sweetness of ripe citrus. Each one's a bit different, but they all share that bright, uplifting scent.

A few standouts and where they come from

Lemon OG mixes citrus with skunk, thanks to its parents Las Vegas Lemon Skunk and OG #18, and its terpene mix includes caryophyllene, myrcene, and limonene. Super Silver Haze smells earthy with lemon accents, built on caryophyllene, humulene, and limonene.

Tangie tastes like tangerines and leans on myrcene, pinene, and limonene. Mimosa Shot inherited her zesty, fresh aroma from two sweet citrusy parents, Mimosa and Fruit Punch.

Lemon Haze is sharp and tangy with sweet citrus notes, while Orange Apricot gets its loud, pungent citrus from tropicannasulfurs, prenylated cannasulfur compounds, and d-Limonene.

Super Lemon Haze uses Beta-Caryophyllene, Terpinolene, and Alpha-Humulene to create a citrus character that surprises people. Each strain has its own backstory and terpene recipe, which is part of the fun for collectors.

Why collectors love citrus strains

Citrus strains usually contain THC between 16 and 31 per cent, with CBD ranging from around 0.18 to 7 per cent. Lemon-forward strains tend to sit between 19 and 30 per cent THC, while Grapefruit lands around 20 to 25 per cent.

Beyond the numbers, citrus strains offer a wide mix of flavours, sweet, diesel, pungent, flowery, earthy, pine, and berry notes all show up in different combinations.

They're available in beginner-friendly options and more specialised varieties. Shops often sort strains by flavour, and citrus is one of the most popular categories.

Many citrus strains also show orange or yellow pistils, which can hint at the flavour before anyone opens the packet.

Even though they smell similar, the terpene profiles vary a lot, so collectors can explore a whole range of aromatic experiences within one flavour family. That variety keeps things interesting.

Citrus Frequently Asked Questions

Limonene's the main one, it's in citrus peel and brings lemon, orange, tangerine, and lime notes to cannabis strains.

Not really. They share a citrus vibe, but different terpenes like myrcene, pinene, and valencene tweak the flavour in different directions.

Most citrus strains sit between 16 and 31 per cent THC, with CBD around 0.18 to 7 per cent, depending on the strain.

They're compounds that add loud, funky citrus aromas with petrol-like undertones, like in Orange Apricot's bold scent character.

Lemon Tree, Lemon Thai, and Super Lemon Haze all deliver zesty, sharp lemon notes with different twists on the classic citrus smell.

Clementine, Orange Bud, and Tangie all bring orange or tangerine flavours, each with its own sweet or tropical edge.

Often, yes. Orange or yellow pistils can suggest a citrus character, giving collectors a visual clue before they smell it.

Myrcene adds sweetness and spice, pinene brings pine freshness, caryophyllene and humulene add earthy or peppery notes, and valencene adds orange depth.

It's a cross of Las Vegas Lemon Skunk and OG #18, blending citrus with skunk using caryophyllene, myrcene, and limonene terpenes.

They're popular and widely available, with beginner-friendly options and more specialised varieties, making them easy to explore and collect.
