DJ Short Seeds started with one grower from Detroit, Michigan: John “DJ” Short. Often called the professor of cannabis, DJ built his reputation as one of the original pioneers of modern cannabis breeding.

DJ has been working nonstop since 1978, refining lines, hunting for special expressions, and setting standards other breeders still follow. Few people in the scene can match his 40+ years of hands-on work.

You’ve almost certainly heard of his most famous creation: Blueberry. DJ didn’t copy it or stabilise someone else’s cut—he bred the original Blueberry line himself and turned it into one of the most loved cannabis genetics of all time.

Because of that level of innovation, High Times inducted him into the Seed Bank Hall of Fame. Breeders and collectors often call him a father of modern cannabis seeds thanks to his careful selection, landrace work, and willingness to experiment long before it was popular.

DJ also comes from a line of plant people—his great-grandmother worked with herbs for their benefits, and that mindset filtered down to him, which is why his work has always leaned toward thoughtful, purposeful breeding.
