OG Kush is one of those names that changed everything. It turned up in the early nineties and pretty much rewrote the rulebook for what cannabis could be, punchy, loud, and packed with that unmistakable fuel-and-lemon kick.
The original is a cross of Chemdawg, Lemon Thai, and Hindu Kush, and it's spawned hundreds of famous offspring like Tahoe OG, Ghost OG, Girl Scout Cookies, and Headband.
It has THC levels sitting around 20–26%, dense buds dripping with resin, and a really potent smell. It's the backbone of West Coast cannabis, and it's still going strong.
OG Kush first showed up in Florida in the early nineties. The story goes that someone crossed a Northern California strain with Chemdawg, Lemon Thai, and Hindu Kush, though some reckon it might've been Emerald Triangle mixed with Neville's Hindu Kush back in 1991.
There's even a theory it's just a special Chemdawg cutting from that time. Whatever the truth, Matt "Bubba" Berger spotted its potential and brought it west to California, where a grower called Josh D polished it up and got it out there.
By 1996 it had landed in Los Angeles, and a couple of years later the "OG" tag stuck. Some say that stands for "Original Gangster," others swear it means "Ocean Grown" because of the California coast.
Either way, by the mid-nineties that loud, lemony, skunky smell was everywhere, and big names like Snoop Dogg and B-Real from Cypress Hill were all over it. It became the foundation of West Coast weed culture almost overnight.
What it smells and tastes like
OG Kush has an unforgettable smell. It's earthy and piney with a big hit of lemon, then diesel, citrus, and skunk all rolled into one.
People describe it as dank, pungent, some even say it's got a hint of body odour in the mix, which sounds weird but somehow works. The real deal should smell like lemon, pine, and fuel all at once.
The taste follows the same path: earthy pine and citrus up front, then a spicy, peppery kick with tangy herbal notes underneath.
Some versions throw in sweet berry (like KushBerry), cheese and lemon diesel (Kush-N-Cheese), or even mint chocolate chip cookie vibes (Cookies Kush), but the classic is all about that woody, piney, lemony punch with a bit of spice and herbs on the side.
The terpenes doing the heavy lifting are myrcene, limonene, and caryophyllene, with backup from linalool and alpha pinene. Myrcene brings the earthy, herbal, peppery stuff.
Limonene adds the citrus brightness. and caryophyllene gives it that spicy edge. Lab tests show beta caryophyllene at 2.8 mg/g, beta myrcene at 2.4 mg/g, linalool at 1.6 mg/g, limonene at 1.5 mg/g, and alpha pinene at 0.8 mg/g. It's a proper layered experience.
The genetics and all the different versions
OG Kush is usually called a hybrid, but the exact split changes depending on the version. Most versions are about 55% sativa and 45% indica, though some lean more indica-heavy at 75/25 or even 70/30.
Funny thing is, even when it's genetically more indica, it often feels more like a sativa. There are four main versions floating about, three lean sativa, one leans indica.
The family tree is massive. Tahoe OG came from inbreeding OG Kush near Lake Tahoe and sits around 20% THC. SFV OG (San Fernando Valley OG) mixes tangerine with diesel and pine.
Ghost OG is an indica-leaning cross of Afghani landrace and OG Kush, hitting about 24% THC with herbal citrus and sweet pungent notes.
Triangle Kush shares the same original genes, both come from Emerald Triangle crossed with Hindu Kush.
Then there's Kosher Kush, Skywalker OG, Loompa's Headband, Bubba Kush, Fire OG, True OG, and Girl Scout Cookies. Hundreds of modern strains trace their roots back to OG Kush, and some breeders have taken it through seven generations of crosses and tweaks.
Strength, look, and where to find seeds
OG Kush usually packs 20–26% THC, with some indoor versions pushing 26%. Different cuts vary a bit, Critical Kush sits at 20–25%, PR Private Reserve OG at 22–24%, and Barneys Farm's version at 23–26%.
Lab results show THCA at 24.5%, THC at 0.4%, CBGA at 0.6%, CBD around 0.1–0.3%, and about 1% CBN. Royal Queen Seeds' OG Kush comes in at 19% THC.
You can find feminised photoperiod OG Kush seeds from more than forty breeders and seed banks worldwide, including Royal Queen Seeds, Nirvana Seeds, Humboldt Seed Company, and Barneys Farm.
There are also clone-only versions kept alive by specialist breeders. The plants are bushy and short, usually between 90–160 cm, with dense, sticky buds that show off the strain's punch.
Buds are big, lime-green clusters covered in resin, with triangle-shaped colas coated in oily, shiny trichomes.
Sugar leaves are green with streaks of lavender and pink, bright orange hairs pop up everywhere, and it’s sometimes possible to see purple tones. Flowering takes about 55–65 days (eight to nine weeks), and the plants put out a generous amount.
