Where indica dominant strains come from

Indica cannabis started life in the foothills and valleys around the Hindu Kush, growing wild in tough, dry conditions. Over time, those plants adapted, they stayed short, grew broad leaves, and flowered quickly to survive.

Breeders spotted those traits and started crossing pure indicas with sativas to create hybrids that lean heavily towards the indica side.

Today's indica dominant strains come from careful pairings of classic indica lines like Kush, Blueberry, and Afghan with sativa partners that add a little extra something.

Girl Scout Cookies, for example, mixes OG Kush with Durban Poison to land at about 60 per cent indica. Wedding Cake pairs Girl Scout Cookies with Cherry Pie, and Blue Cheese brings together Cheese and Blueberry.

Death Bubba crosses Death Star with Bubba Kush, and Blackberry Cream blends Blackberry Kush with Cookies and Cream.

Bubba Kush itself kicked off the whole OG Kush wave back in 1990s Los Angeles, and it's still a blueprint for loads of indica dominant strains today.

Each cross pulls in different flavours, smells, and growth patterns, but they all share that core indica character, compact, resinous, and quick to finish.

What they smell and taste like

Indica dominant strains pump out loads of resin and come with deep, layered smells driven by their rich mix of terpenes. A lot of them have that classic skunky kick, but each one's different.

Blue Cheese hits with berry, skunk, and cheese all at once, and Alien Bubba brings tea, earth, and nutty notes.

Granddaddy Purple's famous for its grape and berry smell, and Blueberry's all sweet fruit. Gelato offers sweet, fruity, and creamy aromas with a touch of lavender and citrus, and Mendo Breath throws vanilla and caramel into the mix.

Ice Cream Cake smells like sweet vanilla and butter, and Purple Kush has earthy and sweet notes with grape and berry underneath.

Bubba Kush goes for rich, earthy flavours with a coffee-like smell, and Northern Lights gives sweet and spicy with earthy accents.

Those smells and flavours come from terpenes, tiny aromatic compounds that give each strain its own personality.

Indica dominant strains often pack more myrcene, beta-caryophyllene, and linalool, and the exact terpene blend is what makes one strain smell totally different from another.

Common ones include caryophyllene, limonene, myrcene, and terpinolene. Girl Scout Cookies, for instance, has plenty of caryophyllene and limonene in the mix.

Cannabinoid levels and chemical profiles

Indica dominant strains come with their own unique ratios of cannabinoids and terpenes, and many sit somewhere in the moderate, balanced zone.

Traditional indicas tend to have a bit more CBD and less THC than sativas, but that's not a hard rule, THC levels jump around a lot depending on the strain.

Some indica dominant hybrids hit impressive numbers. Girl Scout Cookies can reach up to 28 per cent THC, Kosher Kush goes up to 29 per cent, and Blue Cheese usually lands around 19 to 20 per cent.

Purple Kush sits between 17 and 27 per cent, and Blueberry ranges from 16 to 24 per cent. A few indica dominant strains also carry noticeable CBD, with some showing around one to two per cent, and certain ones have trace amounts of CBN at about one per cent.

Beyond THC and CBD, these strains include minor cannabinoids like CBG and CBC. Nowadays, indica dominant strains get grouped by their chemical makeup, THC-dominant, CBD-dominant, myrcene-dominant, limonene and caryophyllene-dominant, or terpinolene-dominant.

That's a more useful way to think about them than the old sativa-versus-indica split. Hybrids tend to maximise what's called the entourage effect because they pack a wider mix of compounds that work together and boost each other.

Plant shape and seed options

Indica dominant hybrids grow as shorter, bushier plants with tight flower clusters and wide, dark green leaves, and they finish flowering in about eight to nine weeks, quicker than sativa-leaning strains.

Strains with 70 per cent indica genetics lean heavily towards indica traits, and those at 90 per cent are about as indica-heavy as hybrids get, with just a sliver of sativa in there.

Popular indica dominant strains include Wedding Cake, Strawberry Banana, Grape Pie, Moon Rock at 70/30, Fire OG at 70/30, White Rhino at 80/20, Garlic Cookies at 90/10, Blue Cookies at 90/10, Biscotti at 80/20, and Jelly Breath at 90/10.

Indica cannabis splits into broad-leaved and narrow-leaved types, and most modern strains blend both.
