Cannabis strains with banana flavours and aromas bring a proper tropical vibe, thanks to the way they've been bred over the years. Some smell like fresh bananas you'd peel for breakfast, others like those little banana sweets you used to get as a kid.

There’s creamy notes, a bit of spice, and earthy touches woven in too. Names like Banana Kush, Apples and Bananas, and Strawberry Banana have built a solid fanbase among collectors

What gives banana strains their fruity smell?

It's all down to the natural oils inside the plant, terpenes, they're called. Limonene is a big one. It's the same stuff that makes citrus peel smell zingy, and in banana strains it leans sweet and tropical.

Myrcene adds a ripe, fruity sweetness you'd recognise from mangoes or hops. Then there's caryophyllene, which throws in a gentle spice to round things out.

There's also a compound called isoamyl acetate, the exact thing sweet manufacturers use to make banana-flavoured treats, and some reckon that's behind the candy-like smell in certain varieties. But honestly, nobody's pinned down the full story yet.

Some plants smell spot-on like banana chews or Laffy Taffy, while others come across more like a fresh banana you've just peeled.

A few even give off that slightly overripe banana-skin vibe, with hints of cinnamon or Christmas spices tucked underneath. It's a proper mixed bag, and that's part of the fun.

A few standout banana strains worth knowing

Banana Kush is probably the most famous of the lot. It's thought to come from crossing Ghost OG with Skunk Haze, and it smells exactly like walking past the banana aisle at the supermarket.

THC sits somewhere between 16% and 27%, and the flavour's a mix of fresh banana, sweet citrus, and a bit of earthy kush in the background.

Some batches lean more towards banana candy, which makes sense given how sweet it is.

Apples and Bananas is a bit more complicated. It's a four-way cross, Platinum Cookies, Granddaddy Purple, Blue Power, and Gelatti, put together by Compound Genetics working with Cookies.

It's a 50/50 split between sativa and indica, and THC usually lands between 23% and 30%, with around 2% CBD.

The taste is fruity and banana-forward, but there's a spicy, peppery edge and a hint of diesel or gas on the finish. The smell's got that peppery fruit salad thing going on, with earthy diesel notes and a whisper of apple. Terpenes clock in at 4.2% total, led by beta-myrcene at just over 2%.

Modified Bananas comes from crossing Banana OG with GMO, and it's strong, THC hits 29% to 30%. It's another balanced hybrid, half sativa and half indica. The smell and taste are banana-like, but you'll also pick up earthy, floral, and sweet berry notes.

Myrcene leads the terpene pack here, bringing that fruity sweetness, while limonene adds citrus and floral touches. CBD sits around 0.87% to 1.13%, with a tiny bit of CBC in there too.

The range of smells and tastes across banana varieties

Banana strains don't all smell the same, which keeps things interesting. Strawberry Banana tastes mostly of ripe strawberries with a clear banana note running through it.

The aroma's intense, banana candy or even that banana-flavoured fluoride from the dentist, creamy, fruity, and a bit spicy when you break the buds up. Banana Mango smells like a tropical punch and tastes like a mix of mangoes and bananas all the way through.

Mint Chocolate Banana's more like a dessert. There’s mint, ripe banana, coffee, and dark chocolate all mingling together, which makes it smell and taste like something you'd order off a fancy menu.

Banana Diesel pairs fruity banana with tangy, fuel-like undertones, sweet and sharp at the same time. Dirty Banana's creamy and sugary, with bright plum notes and a spicy, dank kick. The smell's a blend of fresh banana peel, earthy spice, cream, and a hint of petrol.

Honey Banana smells unmistakably of banana with a sticky, resinous quality, and the flavour's got that honey sweetness alongside the fruit.

Banana OG tastes like banana cream pie and banana peel, with earthy, pine, cinnamon, and coffee notes hiding in the background.

It's worth saying that not every strain with "banana" in the name actually delivers, some miss the mark entirely. But when they get it right, like Banana Buttercups S1 by THCTitan, there’s proper Laffy Taffy taste and smell, plus loads of trichomes.

Why collectors love banana strains

Banana varieties fly off the shelves. Some batches sell out in a day, which tells you how keen people are.

Apples and Bananas, Banana Kush, and Strawberry Banana are especially popular, collectors actively hunt them down for those distinctive genetics.

Apples & Bananas is a Canadian craft strain with bright green buds, dark purple and black streaks, a dense structure, and a thick coating of trichomes.

You'll find banana strains as feminised seeds, autoflowers, and in both sativa and indica forms. The banana flavour often sits alongside blueberry, grape, citrus, or vanilla in hybrids.

Other names you might come across include Banana Punch, Ethiopian Banana CBD, Honey Bananas, and Bananastan, the last one's a cross of Ethiopian Banana and Afkansastan/X18 Pakistani genetics by Doc D.

Modified Bananas produces big, light green buds covered in bright orange hairs and a thin layer of crystal trichomes. Banana Kush's sweet, tropical aroma and 22 different terpenes make it a hit.

Apples & Bananas balances sativa and indica traits nicely, and its Canadian craft genetics from Compound Genetics and Cookies add to its reputation.
