Sativa Dominant

Sativa dominant cannabis seeds means hybrids that lean more toward sativa than indica, usually somewhere between 60% and 90% sativa.

These crosses bring together the uplifting, clear-headed side of sativa with a touch of indica's grounding influence, so these are strains that grow tall and slim with narrow leaves.

Most of what's around today falls into this camp, because pure sativas are pretty rare now.

Where sativa comes from and how it got here

Sativa plants first popped up in hot, dry places with long sunny days.

Think Africa, Central America, Southeast Asia, and parts of Western Asia, places like Thailand, Colombia, Mexico, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.

Back in 1785, a French botanist called Jean-Baptiste Lamarck noticed that these tall, thin plants with finger-like leaves looked nothing like the shorter, bushier indica types, so he gave them their own name.

Over time, breeders collected seeds from these wild spots and brought them back to Europe and North America, where they started crossing them with indicas.

That's how we ended up with the sativa-leaning hybrids you'll find in seed shops now.

How breeders mix the ratios

When someone says a strain is sativa dominant, they're talking about the balance of parent plants in the mix.

Most sit between 60% and 90% sativa, with the rest being indica. Anything over 90% is basically pure sativa.

Take Sour Diesel, that's 90% sativa and 10% indica. Ghost Train Haze and Super Lemon Haze both land at 80/20, while Blue Dream is a gentler 60/40 split.

Jack Herer blends Haze, Northern Lights #5, and Shiva Skunk to get that sativa-leaning feel, and Amnesia Haze mixes Jamaican and Laotian sativas with a bit of Afghan-Hawaiian indica.

Moby Dick crosses Haze with White Widow, and Blue Dream pairs Blueberry indica with Sativa Haze.

The whole point is to keep the mental lift and creativity of sativa while borrowing a bit of indica's sturdiness and shorter flowering window.

What's inside: cannabinoids and flavour

Sativa-leaning strains tend to pack more THC and less CBD than indica types.

You'll often see THC levels between 15% and 28%, though some go higher, Ghost Train Haze hits around 27%, and Bruce Banner can reach 29%. The CBD-to-THC ratio usually hovers around 3:5, which shows the sativa tilt.

As for flavour, expect fruity, sweet, and spicy notes. Terpenes like limonene and myrcene show up a lot, giving those diesel, citrus, and tropical fruit smells you get from strains like Sour Diesel and Green Crack.

Research from a couple of years back pointed to terpinolene and myrcene as the main terpenes in sativa strains. All told, sativa seeds produce well over a hundred different terpenes, which is why each strain smells and tastes a bit different.

Popular strains you'll recognise

These days, most cannabis on the market is sativa dominant, because pure sativas and pure indicas are hard to come by.

Some names you'll know include Harlequin, Strawberry Cough, Durban Poison, Purple Haze, Acapulco Gold, Sour Diesel, and Green Crack.

Super Silver Haze, a cross of Skunk, Northern Lights, and Haze, has won loads of Cannabis Cups for its sweet, metallic aroma.

Amnesia Haze, bred at 70% sativa, became a legend in Amsterdam coffeeshops with its 22% THC and smooth, fruity taste.

Lemon Haze, which sits at 70/30 sativa to indica, gives a fresh lemon flavour with a sweet finish, and Maui Waze traces its roots back to Hawaiian landraces with bright citrus notes.

Breeders keep tweaking these crosses to boost THC, improve harvests, and make sure the plants don't get too unruly while still delivering that classic sativa vibe.

Sativa Dominant Frequently Asked Questions

A sativa-dominant strain has between 51% and 90% sativa in the mix, with indica making up the rest. Anything over 90% counts as pure sativa.

Sativa comes from tropical and subtropical spots like Thailand, Colombia, Mexico, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and parts of Africa, where it's hot, dry, and sunny most of the year.

Most sit between 15% and 28% THC, though some reach 29%. CBD is usually under 1%, so the ratio leans heavily toward THC.

Terpinolene and myrcene are the main ones, with limonene also common. They give sativa strains those fruity, citrus, and spicy smells.

Sure, Sour Diesel, Blue Dream, Super Lemon Haze, Ghost Train Haze, Green Crack, Jack Herer, Amnesia Haze, Super Silver Haze, Moby Dick, and Maui Waze are all popular picks.

They're naturally tall and slim. They've got thin, light green leaves and take longer to finish than indica-leaning types.

Sativa-dominant strains have more sativa genetics, pack more THC, and smell fruity or spicy. Indica-dominant ones have more CBD, and smell earthy.

They're pretty rare now. Most strains are hybrids that blend sativa and indica to balance the effects and make them easier to work with.

Think fruity, sweet, citrus, spicy, and sometimes diesel-like. Lemon Haze tastes like fresh lemon, Moby Dick has pine and citrus, and Sour Diesel smells like fuel.

Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, a French naturalist, classified Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica as separate species back in 1785, based on how different they looked.
