Where haze came from

The Haze story kicks off in 1960s Santa Cruz, where the Haze Brothers wanted to create a pure sativa hybrid by crossing landrace genetics from four different corners of the world.

Original Haze brought together Mexican, Colombian, Thai, and South Indian sativas, each chosen for its vigour and unique character.

By the early 1970s, these genetics had been refined into a 100% sativa strain known for its long flowering time, tall structure, and strong potency.

Sam the Skunkman took Haze seeds over to the Netherlands in the early 1980s and sold them under the name Cultivator's Choice.

Dutch breeders like Nevil Schoenmakers then got to work stabilising and crossing the line, creating the famous Haze A and Haze C males that would go on to underpin a whole new wave of award-winning strains.

The Haze Brothers used colour codes, silver, gold, purple, to label their seasonal batches, which is why you'll see names like Silver Haze and Purple Haze floating around.

From those early days in California to the breeding rooms of Amsterdam, Haze genetics have travelled the world and left their mark everywhere they've landed.

What haze smells and tastes like

Haze strains are famous for their bold, multi-layered aromas. Common scent notes include spicy white pepper, fresh citrus like lemon and lime, earthy incense, pine needles, and sometimes hints of tropical fruit or even tobacco.

The flavour follows the same path: a blend of spicy herbs, woody undertones, and sweet citrus zest, often with a metallic or cathedral-like depth that really sets Haze apart from other sativa families.

The terpene mix varies quite a bit but often features pinene for that pine freshness, limonene for citrus brightness, caryophyllene for spice and pepper, myrcene for earthy herbal notes, and terpinolene for a calm, fresh pine vibe.

This aromatic complexity is a hallmark of the family and a big reason why Haze genetics remain so sought-after by collectors and breeders alike.

Some hybrids add their own twist: Super Lemon Haze leans hard into tangy lemon, Blue Haze offers sweet berry citrus, Chocolate Haze blends melon with chocolate, and Cannalope Haze delivers fruity melon flavours.

Famous haze hybrids

Haze genetics have spawned an enormous family tree. Super Silver Haze is a 70% sativa cross of Northern Lights #5, Skunk, and Haze that won multiple Cannabis Cups and mostly contains around 22% THC.

Super Lemon Haze, a Lemon Skunk × Super Silver Haze hybrid, took back-to-back High Times Cannabis Cup titles in 2007 and 2008 with its zesty lemon aroma and THC levels above 20%.

Neville's Haze, created by Nevil Schoenmakers, remains a benchmark for pure Haze potency and cerebral character.

Other influential descendants include Amnesia Haze, Purple Haze with its rare purple-tinged pistils, G13 Haze which won the 2007 Cannabis Cup, Blue Haze (Blueberry × Amnesia Haze), Cannalope Haze (Haze Brothers × Mexican Michoacán), and Jack Herer, a legendary strain that helped cement Amsterdam's reputation as a cannabis breeding capital.

There's also Piff Haze, a beige and dark brown-haired variant that became popular on the U.S. east coast in the late 1990s and early 2000s, it had a distinct haze aroma and is still considered by enthusiasts to be superior to many modern offerings.

Modern haze seeds

Original Haze strains were notorious for their extended flowering periods, often 16 weeks or more, and towering heights.
