Gorilla Glue and Gorilla Glue Crosses

Gorilla Glue, sometimes called GG4 or Original Glue, is one of those strains everyone's heard of, and for good reason. It came about by accident around 2013 when breeder Joesy Whales ended up with a surprise cross of Chem's Sister, Sour Dubb, and Chocolate Diesel.

The result was a sticky, resinous beast that swept the 2014 High Times Cups and never really left the spotlight. The buds are famously gluey, hence the name, and the smell is bold, piney, and gassy.

Since then, breeders have crossed Gorilla Glue with all sorts of other strains, creating hybrids that bring in fruity, sweet, earthy, or diesel notes while keeping that signature stickiness.

Where it all started

Gorilla Glue #4 wasn't planned, it happened when a hermaphrodite Chem Sister plant pollinated some Sour Dubb. Joesy Whales and his mate Mardogg kept the seeds, picked out the best females, and found the standout phenotype that became GG4.

Each parent brought something different to the table. Chem's Sister is a sativa-leaning Chemdawg offshoot from the mid-nineties, known for high THC and a bit of zip. Sour Dubb, a mix of Sour Bubble and East Coast Sour Diesel, adds that pungent kick and loads of resin.

Chocolate Diesel, a sativa cross of Sour Diesel and Chocolate Thai, throws in chocolate and candy sweetness plus deep green and brown leaves with purple streaks and long orange hairs.

Put them together and the result is a balanced hybrid, usually around 60% indica and 40% sativa, though some crosses lean heavier one way or the other.

The name comes from the crazy sticky resin that literally acts like glue. That's how dense the trichomes are. GG4 is the most famous version, but there's also GG1, which leans more sativa, and GG5, which sits somewhere in the middle.

Breeders around the world have used Gorilla Glue genetics to make countless new hybrids, treating its potency and resin as the gold standard.

What it smells and tastes like

Gorilla Glue hits with a pungent, dank, piney smell that's got a gassy, almost chemical edge to it. There's earthy coffee in there, diesel undertones, woody pine, and a hint of chocolate.

Some people pick up citrus, a bit of sweetness, even bubblegum alongside the diesel and sour notes. There’s a piney scent with a touch of fruit and coffee drifting around.

The flavour follows the same path, rich and earthy with chocolate and coffee running through it, plus diesel and pine. It's complex: citrus, forest, pine, a bit of fruit, and a creamy finish with diesel.

The main terpene is caryophyllene, which gives Gorilla Glue that gruff, gassy character. That terpene backbone stays pretty consistent across crosses, but each hybrid adds its own twist.

Citral Glue brings in Pine Sol-like citrus, Future mixes sharp cacao with earthy lemon, and Wedding Glue blends petrol, cream, and chocolate.

Crosses worth knowing about

Gorilla Glue's genetics have been crossed with loads of other strains, each one pairing that sticky resin and bold smell with something new. Glookies, from Barney's Farm, mixes Glue and Cookies genetics, think peanut butter and jelly.

Platinum Gorilla, from In House Genetics, crosses their Glue cut with Platinum Kush, bringing sharp citrus, skunky earth, gas, and cedar. Bigfoot Glue pairs Humboldt Headband with Original Glue for a funky, gassy character.

Wedding Glue, also called Gorilla Cake, marries Original Glue with Wedding Cake, giving petrol, cream, and chocolate flavours with thick white trichomes. It's also available as an autoflower.

Zookies happened by accident at Alien Labs, mixing Glue and Cookies with Animal Cookies' OG genetics.

Then there's Future, which pairs Exotic Genetix's Glue cut with Alien Genetics' Starfighter (a hybrid of Alien Tahoe OG and Lemon Alien Dawg), blending Glue's cacao notes with earthy, sharp lemon.

Gorilla Cookies crosses Gorilla Glue with Girl Scout Cookies, and Gorilla Zkittlez mixes Glue with Zkittlez for a heavy indica-leaning plant. Mother Gorilla is a sativa-leaning hybrid at 70%, crossing Reina Madre with GG4 for fruity buds.

GG-48 Auto is a fast autoflower cross of Gorilla Glue and AK48 (a blend of Thai, Colombian, Mexican, and Afghan landraces), packing serious THC.

God's Glue, from Ministry of Cannabis, crosses two Gorilla Glues for a super potent result. Gorilla Candy brings intensely sweet smells and flavours with heavy resin and high THC.

Potency, looks, and staying power

Gorilla Glue strains usually clock in above 20% THC, often hitting 23–27% and sometimes pushing 30% in certain crosses. CBD stays low, around 0.05% to 0.1%.

The buds are dense and frosty, covered in trichomes, with light to medium green colour, occasional purple hints, and bright orange hairs. The sticky, glue-like texture is what sets it apart, these buds are exceptionally resinous.

Gorilla Glue #4 exploded onto the scene in 2014, winning first place at the Michigan Cannabis Cup, Los Angeles Cannabis Cup, and High Times Jamaican World Cup in 2015. Ten years on, it's still one of the most popular strains around, a fixture in cannabis culture.

Archive Seeds and other breeders have kept it in the spotlight, using its genetics to create cutting-edge hybrids with even more potency and flavour.

The strain is available as standard, feminised, and autoflowering seeds. Gorilla Glue is resilient to disease, and produces extremely resinous, sticky buds.

The genetics have been woven into new varieties worldwide, with its potency and resin serving as a benchmark for breeders.

Gorilla Glue remains a staple in the cannabis community, celebrated for its robust character and distinct smell, and is kept by long-term collectors as a foundational strain alongside newer purple and candy varieties.
