Where Zkittlez came from

Zkittlez was born in California when 3rd Gen Family teamed up with Terp Hogz. They mixed the indica-leaning Grape Ape with the sativa-heavy Grapefruit, then threw in a third parent that's still a secret.

That mystery strain is probably what gives Zkittlez its tropical, candy-shop aroma. The result leans about 70% indica and 30% sativa.

Once it hit the scene, Zkittlez racked up awards fast. First place at two 2015 Cannabis Cups, then top spot at the 2016 Emerald Cup.

Those wins put it on the map as a flavour-first strain, and breeders everywhere started using it to create new lines. Crosses like Z Cube and Wonderbrett's OZK followed, proving Zkittlez had serious staying power in the West Coast scene.

What it smells and tastes like

Zkittlez resembles a similarity to opening a pack of fruit sweets, with sweet tropical vibes, grape candy, and berries, with a hint of citrus and bubblegum underneath.

Some batches lean towards darker fruits like blackberry, strawberry, and blueberry, while others go tangy with grapefruit, lemon, and melon. Also with a small catch of berry and citrus notes that are reminiscent of juicy fruit gum or a fresh fruit cocktail.

The terpenes doing the heavy lifting are caryophyllene (peppery), myrcene (herbal), pinene (pine), limonene (citrus), and humulene.

That mix is why Zkittlez has a reputation as one of the best seed strains around, some collectors often say nothing else comes close.

Popular Zkittlez crosses

The original Zkittlez has become a building block for loads of hybrids. Gorilla Zkittlez, from Barney's Farm, mixes Gorilla Glue #4 with Zkittlez to create a 60/40 indica-leaning strain that blends sweet fruit with earthy notes and a hint of cherry and cinnamon.

Watermelon Zkittlez crosses Zkittlez with watermelon strains, delivering an ultra-sweet character with ripe melon and tropical fruit aromas, and at around 25% THC, it's a strong one.

Blue Zkittlez blends Blue Diamond and Skittles, offering wildflower, tart citrus, earthiness, and berry flavours at a gentler 14% THC. Zkittlez Cake, an indica-leaning cross of Wedding Cake and Skittles, sits somewhere between sweet and earthy with a balanced 20% THC.

Zkittlez Pie, bred by Raw Genetics, is a 50/50 hybrid of Zkittlez and Georgia Pie, also at 20% THC. You'll also find Strawberry Zkittlez, Orange Zkittlez, Sour Zkittlez, Lemon Zkittlez, and Acai Zkittlez, each highlighting a different fruit twist.

Fifteen different Zkittlez varieties are out there, bred by everyone from Dying Breed Seeds and Advanced Seeds to CSI Humboldt, Growers Choice, Monster Genetics, Nirvana Seeds, and Original Sensible Seeds.

Seed types and what the plants look like

Zkittlez seeds come in a few different formats. Photoperiod varieties and autoflowering seeds. Regular seeds produce both male and female, while feminized seeds skip the males entirely. The seeds themselves are hard, shiny beans.

Because Zkittlez comes from classic indica genetics, these strains tend to stay low and spread out rather than shoot upwards. Buds are large, dense, and cluster into chunky, cone-shaped lumps.

Colours vary depending on the phenotype, bright orange, green, purple, and blue are all common, with dark orange-to-amber hairs and a frosty coating of white trichomes.

The blend of sativa and indica traits makes Zkittlez lines fairly easy to work with, and they produce generous amounts in different setups.

Zkittlez strains carry moderate to high THC levels. The original usually sits at 13–15% THC, though some phenotypes now push past 20%. Watermelon Zkittlez hits 25%, while Gorilla Zkittlez Auto lands around 20%. 

Across the family, cannabinoid content ranges from 15% to 23%. Zkittlez is often crossed with more potent lines to add flavour.
